This WebQuest addresses the following 7th Grade Georgia Performance Standard.
SS7G7: The student will explain the impact of location, climate, physical characteristics, distribution of natural resources, and population distribution on Southwest Asia (Middle East).
b. Describe how the deserts and rivers of Southwest Asia (Middle East) have affected the population in terms of where people live, the type of work they do, and how they travel.
This task can be assigned as an individual project or as a group project. If the project is assigned as an individual project, it will take students 5-7 hours to complete. If you are pressed for time, consider assigning the WebQuest as a group project and tell the students they should divide the work of creating the slides so that each student creates a slide and they combine the slides at the end.
Suggestion:
Have students view and give feedback to a minimum of 3 other students when they finish their PowerPoint. You may also want to print the rubric and have several copies for students to grade one another's PowerPoint presentations using the rubric.
If the teacher or student needs help creating a PowerPoint, here are a couple of videos to help.

Part 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y731sGFoQWU
Remediation:
Students that do not know how to create a PowerPoint presentation may create a poster board instead. The poster board should contain all of the following information.
Extension:
Many of the students will have some prior knowledge about all of the fighting that is happening in the Middle East. Based on this activity, students will be able to explain how deserts and rivers have affected population distribution in Southwest Asia. Som students may research the topic more deeply and include political reasons for why they have chosen where they would want to live, but when choosing a place to live, the focus will be on the impact of geography.
